Cassville FCCLA Members attend 2017 State Leadership Conference
Students from Cassville Middle and High School attended the annual Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference, March 19-21, at Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach. There were more than 1,600 students (grades 6-12) and there teachers in attendance. Twenty Cassville FCCLA members attended the conference along with two local chapter advisors. This year’s student-developed conference theme was “Channel into Leadership” The conference featured speakers and workshops on topics such as preparing for college and careers, leadership skills, anti-bullying programs, and technology’s impact in education, careers, and on the family. In addition to leadership training, honors and recognition, more than 720 students participated in 30 competitive events, including early childhood education, entrepreneurship, culinary arts, fashion design, career investigation, chapter service learning projects and sports nutrition.
The following Cassville FCCLA members competed in STAR Events at the state level. Dalia Phelps, Mary Hayse, and Hayley Nape- received Silver in Focus on Children Senior. Their project was titled, "Use Your Manners, Please" they developed and taught a lesson on the importance of manners to 1st grade students. Willow Linton and Michaela Harvey- received a Bronze medal in National Programs in Action Junior. Their project was titled, "The Hunger Project," they worked to raise awareness of hunger in our community and collected food items to be donated. Laura Stringer- received a Gold in Career Investigation Senior. For her project, Laura investigated the speech pathologist career, she did extensive research and participated in a job shadowing experience. Robert Elliott- received a Silver in Sports Nutrition Senior. Robert developed a nutrition and hydration plan, and workout regimen designed to meet the goals and needs of an athlete training for power lifting competition. Lily Love- received a Gold in Recycle and Redesign Junior. Lily created a new dress made completely from recycled paper. Britney Nowak- received a Gold in Teach and Train Senior. Britney's project involved researching the teaching career, planning and implementing a lesson in her Teach and Train practicum class, and job shadowing an elementary school teacher. Collin Pearman and Kaylyn Bryant- received a Gold in Digital Stories for Change Senior. They developed a video to address the topic of financial fitness. Competitors Britney Nowak, Collin Pearman and Kaylyn Bryant will advance to National STAR Events Competition.
In addition to competitive events, Cassville FCCLA members Zac Acheson, Willow Linton, and Hope Boston were named as FCCLA Leaders to Watch. Coleman Hoppes was elected as one of the two Missouri FCCLA National Officer Candidates. He will run for a position on the FCCLA National Executive Council at National Leadership Conference this summer in Nashville, TN.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for young men and women enrolled in family and consumer sciences education courses. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers, and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues. The Missouri association ranks fifth in the nation in membership with more than 9,800 members. There are more than 320 FCCLA chapters across the state.
